A Video on the Mimic Octopus
The main focus of Selin's project was to explain biomimicry: when an organism mimics (or copies) another, to the general public. She chose a project like this in hopes of sparking deep interest in the marine world, possibly even leading people to care about ocean conservation. Through the use of science communication, Selin explores the topic of biomimicry by observing the mimic octopus. However, given that biomimicry can be used as both defense against predators and for hunting prey, she also gives examples of different animals with this ability and the different types of mimicry.
Selin compiled all of her findings and research into a YouTube video.Watch her video!
Selin is a 17 year-old high schooler from Istanbul, Turkey.
Kelli is an amazing mentor. She is very passionate and knowledgeable about and marine biology. She taught me so many new things that are going to be super helpful in the future about scientific research. She was very understanding and supportive when I decided to change the format of my final project, which I appreciate a lot. Without her support, I wouldn't have been able to finish my project. Working under Kelli's guidance was a great experience overall.
